Text Box: Principal’s Message
Last week I was lucky enough to participate in a fishing trip. I didn’t catch any fish but the trip could not, in my eyes, have been more successful. While some kids did catch fish, the success to which I am referring did not hinge on that fact. Before the bus carrying a contingent of Muriel Mould kids, teachers, and parents even arrived at the lake, indeed, even before it left the school, the roots had been planted. I am referring to the fact that so many people stepped up to make sure that some of our kids could spend a couple of hours learning a new skill, enjoying the outdoors with their friends, and having fun. Forestry personnel with radio-controlled vehicles escorted us to the lake, at the lake hay bales were set up, fires were blazing, the campsite had been shoveled out, fishing gear had been made and sat waiting for use, and out on the lake the ice surface was perforated with enough holes to accommodate everyone’s desire to drop a line into the lake. Throughout the day adults were helping kids (and each other!), kids were helping other kids, and kids were helping some of the adults. Even other people at the lake who were not involved with the school helped out and more than one commented on the great experience they felt they had become a part of.

It all served as a great reminder that this community really cares about our kids. And I see it everyday and in so many ways: I see community agencies putting on programs in and out of school to support kids and their learning; I see the support the local bands give to provide food for our breakfast program and school supplies for kids; I see parents volunteering their time unselfishly to run hot lunch programs, ski races, a huge pancake breakfast, and so many other activities too numerous to iterate fully here; I see staff members (and their spouses!) working long hours to plan, organize, and run activities all of which continue to make Muriel Mould a great place for learning.

And this week we have Marian Rose’s Community Dance Workshop at our school, another event taking place because of the tireless effort (and fundraising!) by school community members (and even one who has moved but has continued to coordinate the event from afar and whom we still consider “one of ours”) like you. Everyone is invited to come out tomorrow afternoon to enjoy the fruits of her labour when the kids will perform some of the steps they have
Sincerely,

Mr. Guy Epkens-Shaffer
